Local News in Brief : Treatment Plans Delayed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has delayed until mid-November a decision on whether to build a plant to treat toxic liquids, called leachate, at a closed dump in Monterey Park.
EPA spokesman Terry Wilson said Tuesday that the agency had planned to announce this week that it would build the plant, but delayed the decision after the cities of Montebello and Monterey Park asked for time to analyze the need.
The dump each day generates more than 4,000 gallons of leachate, which is now trucked to a plant in Vernon. EPA officials say the amount could increase as cleanup work progresses at the dump and that an on-site plant would be a cheaper and more reliable way to treat the waste.
The plant would be built on the 45-acre portion of the Operating Industries landfill north of the Pomona Freeway. Leachate from the dump’s 135 acres south of the freeway would be piped to the plant.
