Eugene Orza, counsel for the Major League Players Assn., criticized baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth for allegedly interfering in negotiations to end the suspension of Baltimore Orioles second baseman Alan Wiggins.
Wiggins was suspended when he tested positive for drug use. A decision on his status was expected this week, but Orza said that Ueberroth’s actions have increased the chances of Wiggins’ filing a grievance from “1 in 100.” The main issue, he said, is Ueberroth’s decision to suspend Wiggins without pay.
Orza said he no longer is certain the matter will be resolved by a joint agreement among Wiggins, the players’ association and the Orioles.
The Orioles have since asked for unconditional release waivers on Wiggins.
