Snow, Cold Give Midwest Early Taste of Winter
A preview of winter whipped through the upper Midwest on Friday with snow, record cold and strong north winds.
“I’ve seen a lot of people running around with their jackets on this morning, and people are talking about checking antifreeze in their vehicles,” said Ron Mercure, owner of Brewer’s Canoers, a resort shop in Valentine, Neb. The predawn temperature there dropped to 25 degrees, breaking the record of 26 set in 1902.
“It’s a reminder that winter is not too far down the road,” Mercure said.
Blustery Winds
Snow that began Thursday night continued to fall Friday over northern Minnesota and Wisconsin and was accompanied by blustery winds.
“The peak (wind) gust we had was 42 m.p.h. this morning and the snowflakes were about the size of quarters,” said Mike Michalak, who was monitoring weather equipment at WJFW-TV in Rhinelander, Wis.
The first Midwest snowfall of the season began Wednesday in Indiana and Michigan, weather officials said.
