NEW DEADLINE

With about $15 million still in the bank, the USA for Africa Foundation missed its self-declared Sept. 30 deadline for announcing the last of its grants.

Thanks to the last few millions in “We Are the World” foreign royalties that have dribbled in to the foundation over the past six months, there is about $11.5 million in African relief money to spend and about $3.5 million for U.S. homeless and hungry, according to spokeswoman Joyce Deep.

Announcement of who gets it will have to wait for a USA for Africa directors meeting later this month. All the money will be allocated, if not actually spent, by November or December, she said.

Bob Burns, director of the Los Angeles Social Services Department, which acts as the city’s charity oversight watchdog, said that his agency would inquire about the missed deadline: “They (the foundation) went on the record before the (Social Services) Commission last April 27 that they would have it spent by the end of September.”
