Pittsburgh, Pa., Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri, saying he is glad to finally “tell the true story,” acknowledged that he is suffering from a rare, usually fatal disease but plans to govern as long as possible. At a news conference, Caliguiri said he would like to seek a fourth term in 1989 but stopped short of making a formal announcement. The mayor, 55, said he is suffering from amyloidosis, an incurable disease that attacks vital body tissues and organs. The average survival rate for people with the disease is one to four years, but some have lived five to 10 years and longer, officials said.
