War in the Persian Gulf
U.S. sends a limited military presence into a war zone at the request of one of the combatants. Then comes the escalation. We get more and more deeply involved because what would happen to our face if we pulled out now? Besides there’s always the domino effect/threat of world communism.
We move on into a shooting war without a declaration. But Americans are killing and will inevitably be killed.
Vietnam? No, the Persian Gulf.
