War in the Persian Gulf

When asked by reporters whether or not he was concerned about Iran’s recent threats to retaliate against the U.S., President Reagan replied, “Not very.” As the mother of a young man on his way to the Persian Gulf aboard one of this country’s antiquated minesweepers, I am very concerned!

I’m concerned that my son and his shipmates are going into a war zone on ships that only two months ago were used only for Navy Reserve training. I’m concerned that some military experts have publicly stated that these ships are inadequate for the task of minesweeping against modern mines. I’m concerned that these ships have a history of frequent engine breakdowns and other operational problems. I’m concerned that, once again, thousands of this nations’ sons are being sent to protect property that belongs to other nations. I’m concerned that Reagan has chosen this action without the consent of Congress. And, last but not least, I’m concerned about Reagan’s lack of concern.
