When the Rams arrived in New Orleans for today’s game against the Saints, Coach John Robinson told reporters that the non-union players the club recruited really aren’t that bad.

“It’s not like you’re getting them out of a tavern,” he said.

Then he laughed.

“OK,” he said, “we got some out of a tavern.”

Add Robinson: Asked his game plan against the Saints, he said: “Defensively, we’re practicing against the T formation. They’re not going to run the wishbone, I think.”

Philadelphia Manager Lee Elia was quoted recently as saying of his Phillies, “We’ve got a lot of work to do this winter to clean out the garbage.”

If you think you’ve read something like that before, you’re right.

Said Elia after the 1982 season, when he managed the Chicago Cubs: “You get tired of looking at garbage in your own backyard.”

The next season, Elia was gone.
