France and Spain dealt an unprecedented blow against the Basque separatist guerrilla movement ETA in a closely coordinated crackdown on both sides of the border. Spanish police in the northern Basque city of Bilbao said that six suspected members of ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom) were arrested, raising to 35 the number of arrests in that region since Friday. In addition, French authorities handed over 38 Basques, bringing to 130 the number of suspected guerrillas expelled by France since July, 1986, Spanish police said. The 38 were among 91 Basques rounded up by French police over the weekend. France agreed in August to step up efforts to eradicate terrorist activity, targeting ETA members who seek refuge there.
