Sri Lankan President Junius R. Jayewardene accused India of not doing enough to end ethnic violence on the island and warned Indian peacekeeping troops that if they do not do the job, he will order them home and send in his own troops. In New Delhi, the Indian government denied it has received such an ultimatum from Jayewardene. Clashes between minority Tamils and majority Sinhalese in the Indian Ocean nation have killed at least 18 people in five days, damaged 500 houses and shops and left 5,000 people homeless. India deployed 9,000 troops in Sri Lanka in late July under a pact aimed at ending a four-year-old civil war.
