Bail was set at $1 million Monday for the man charged with kidnaping and raping a San Diego State University student last week near Alpine.

James Wednesday Mosley, 27, of Tyler, Tex., pleaded innocent to attempted murder, rape, kidnaping for robbery, and related charges.

San Diego Municipal Judge Melinda Lasater set the bail and an Oct. 20 preliminary hearing.

The incident occurred Sept. 30 as the 18-year-old student left a bakery in San Diego. She was grabbed and taken to the 6000 block of Dehesa Road near Alpine, where she was raped and her throat was cut, police said.

Left for dead in a ditch, she was rescued by a California Highway Patrol officer who lived nearby.

Mosley was arrested while driving the student’s car on Interstate 8 at Sunrise Highway.

According to records he filled out in jail, he is on parole in Texas after serving six years of a 15-year sentence. The prior offense was not disclosed.

If convicted of the kidnap charge, he faces a mandatory life term.
