Air Crash Survivor, 4, Takes First Steps
Four-year-old Cecelia Cichan, the only survivor of the crash of Northwest Airlines Flight 255, has started using a walker but remains in a wheelchair much of the time while her injuries mend, a hospital spokesman said Monday.
Cecelia, of Tempe, Ariz., is in good condition in the rehabilitation unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center burn facility, spokesman Mike Harrison said.
The Aug. 16 crash, just after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, killed 156 people including Cecelia’s parents and 6-year-old brother. Doctors say the girl may be released in about two weeks if she doesn’t require additional skin graft surgery.
