A lamp failed today in the stationary weather satellite watching the Western states but an alternate lamp is expected to keep the satellite in service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported.

The GOES-West satellite is now using the last of four lamps with which it was equipped for use in taking pictures of the Earth’s weather systems. The weather agency hopes that the lamp now in use will work for a year or more, allowing the satellite to continue observing the weather from its position 22,300 miles above the Earth.
