At least three people were wounded as Chilean troops and police fired on rock-throwing demonstrators in Santiago during a nationwide general strike. The Interior Ministry reported that 26 people were arrested, including six prominent Socialists who were singing the national anthem from the steps of the city cathedral. It was the biggest single day of protest against the military government of President Augusto Pinochet since a two-day strike in July, 1986, when eight people were killed. The daylong strike was called by the National Workers’ Command, the main trade union federation, to press for a 30% wage increase.
