Japan’s Emperor Hirohito was in much more serious condition than officially reported in the first week after his surgery to bypass an intestinal obstruction, newspaper reports said. Hirohito underwent a 2 1/2-hour operation Sept. 22 after complaining of nausea and a frequent sensation of having a full stomach. He was discharged Oct. 8 and has been recuperating at the imperial palace since then. The Daily Yomiuri and the Japan Times reported that the 86-year-old emperor had suffered from serious kidney and heart problems and showed signs of pneumonia after the surgery.
