The Philippine newspaper that accused President Corazon Aquino of hiding under her bed during the latest coup attempt wilted Tuesday under a presidential counterattack.

The Philippine Star devoted much of its front page to an apology and ran a cartoon of itself waving an olive branch and declaring, “We’re sorry Mrs. President.”

Writer Luis D. Beltran devoted his entire column to explaining that he had not meant to call Aquino a coward.

On Monday, Aquino summoned reporters to her bedroom to show that the bed’s paneled sides would have prevented her diving under it as the bullets flew during an Aug. 28 coup attempt.

In an angrier reaction than she has publicly shown to any of the tribulations of her 20 months as president, she sued Beltran for libel.

“In my 54 years, nobody has called me a coward,” she said.
