The World : Killed 71, Iran Rebels Say

Share

Iranian dissidents reported killing 71 soldiers in a weekend attack on two military bases in western Iran. The National Liberation Army, composed largely of fighters from the opposition Moujahedeen Khalq, said in a statement that 17 soldiers were captured in the assault on the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s forces. The rebel group said it lost six men in destroying artillery emplacements and arms depots before withdrawing into Iraq. There was no independent verification of the claim; Tehran has acknowledged the dissidents’ campaign by launching counterattacks against border bases recently.
