The Nation : Snow, Record Lows Bring Taste of Winter

A blast of winter swept in from the north with snow and high winds, while much of the eastern third of the nation shivered through a record cold morning. About three inches of snow fell in the foothills south and west of Denver overnight. A Colorado State Patrol dispatcher said a few cars spun off roads because of slush, but no major travel restrictions were reported. Snow blanketed the higher elevations of South Dakota’s Black Hills. Light snow fell over much of central and south Wyoming. Clear skies made for unseasonably cool pre-dawn temperatures over the eastern third of the nation and the lower Mississippi Valley, where readings were mostly in the 30s and 40s. Temperatures dipped into the 20s over the northern Appalachians. Record low temperatures were broken or tied in at least 13 cities in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, the Virginias, North Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas.
