Share

Philippine officials reported that they foiled another coup plot after mutineers stole an armored personnel carrier from army headquarters in Manila. Officials immediately deployed troops and tanks around the presidential palace, but no attacks occurred, and the stolen vehicle was found abandoned on a university campus about a mile from President Corazon Aquino’s residence. Meanwhile, an armed forces spokesman said the military is preparing for the courts-martial of 68 officers and 17 enlisted men charged with participation in an Aug. 28 coup attempt. He said 34 of the defendants are still at large, including Col. Gregorio (Gringo) Honasan, who led the coup attempt.
