Local News in Brief : Flyers Sent Opposing Santa Clarita Cityhood

Santa Clarita Valley voters have received their first campaign mailers opposing the proposed city of Santa Clarita, according to residents who received the flyers over the weekend.

The mailing from a group called the Santa Clarita Caution Committee seeks financial support and volunteers to work in opposition to the city’s incorporation, which will be voted on by residents Nov. 3.

“The voter has been told repeatedly that cityhood won’t cost anything,” the flyer reads in part. “This simplistic approach doesn’t inspire any confidence in our group.”

The flyers, which came with return envelopes for contributions and checklists of duties for volunteers, began arriving at voters’ homes Saturday, residents said. They were signed by Newhall resident Marilyn Wendberg, but did not say what her position with the group is. Wendberg could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Alan Cameron, a spokesmen for the City of Santa Clarita Formation Committee, said he had not heard of the group until he received the mailing. He said the mailing does not name members of the Caution Committee and that his own efforts to find out who sponsored the mailing were unsuccessful.

“Whoever the Caution Committee is should come forward and identify themselves, and if they don’t, the Santa Clarita voter has every right to be suspicious of who they are,” Cameron said. “They are keeping themselves hidden, and that isn’t right.”
