Burkina Faso’s military leader, Capt. Blaise Compaore, made his first public appearance since taking power last week in a bloody coup. Dressed in camouflage fatigues, he attended a special meeting of government officials, reportedly to discuss events leading to the overthrow and death of President Thomas Sankara. No official statement was issued after the meeting. At Sankara’s grave outside Ouagadougou, capital of the West African nation, security forces dispersed more than 2,000 students gathered to protest the president’s execution.
