A union lawyer said a Safeway clerk, given a reward for finding a wallet containing $2,900 in cash and money orders, has been threatened with disciplinary action unless she gives the $50 to the company. Richard McCracken, a lawyer for Local 373 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Napa and Solano counties, said the clerk was employed in a Safeway store in St. Helena and he will file a grievance in an effort to allow her to keep the money. Clerk Debora Pike found the wallet last week and gave it to the store manager and the owner gave Pike a $50 reward for her honesty, McCracken said. Later, the attorney said, the manager informed her that he was advised by his superiors that she must give the money back because accepting a reward violates Safeway’s policy against tips. She must return the money to the company or face disciplinary action, the manager said.
