Japan took the lead in the men’s team competition after the first day of the World Gymnastics Championships at Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Japan had 287.8 points, followed by the United States with 285.6 points and Romania with 285.2 points. Only 16 of the 27 teams competed. The remaining teams, including China and the Soviet Union, are scheduled for today.

In the all-around competition, Koichi Mizushima of Japan took the lead with 58.6 points. Sepp Zellweger of Switzerland was second with 57.75 and Tim Daggett of the United States was third with 57.6.
