Sen. Evans Won’t Seek Reelection
Sen. Daniel J. Evans (R-Wash.) said Tuesday that he will not seek reelection next year.
Evans, 62, cited “personal factors” for the decision and said he lamented the lack of real debate in the Senate. He also noted his distaste for campaigning in an era of single-issue politics.
Evans, known as a moderate, is the only man elected to three consecutive terms as governor of Washington, and has never lost an election in the Democratic-leaning state.
Evans is the fifth senator to announce he will not seek reelection. On Monday, Sen. John C. Stennis (D-Miss.) said that he will retire at the end of next year. Previous announcements had come from Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.) and Republicans Robert T. Stafford of Vermont and Paul S. Trible Jr. of Virginia.
