Police in Amritsar, India, detained 250 people near the Sikhs’ Golden Temple and placed a curfew on the city in an effort to head off a rally planned by militant Sikhs who want a separate nation in India’s Punjab state. Of the 250 people rounded up, 150 were citizens of Bangladesh illegally in India, and another 85 were Sikhs who were questioned and then released, police said. In New Delhi, meanwhile, investigators searched for two Sikh gunmen suspected of killing 11 civilians with automatic weapons fire. A third gunman was killed by police as he tried to flee.
