Mack Trucks Inc. closed its massive, 62-year-old production plant today, eliminating 1,800 jobs and marking the end of an era for the nation’s second-largest truck maker. The last truck rolled off the assembly line at the Allentown plant Wednesday without fanfare.

Company officials downplayed the closing of the aging facility, which marked the beginning of a new era for Winnsboro, S.C., where Mack opened an $80 million, state-of-the-art assembly plant last August.
