Local News in Brief : City Irate Over Prayer Flier
A prayer meeting advertisement lacked the City of Downey’s blessing when it was mailed on paper bearing the city seal, an official said.
“We did not authorize the letterhead to be used and it does not have city endorsement,” City Manager Don Davis said of the notices, which advertised the Nov. 5 Downey Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.
About 550 notices, saying the “Christian event is patterned after the National Prayer Breakfast held annually in Washington, D.C.,” were mailed out in late September, using the same format as fliers sent out for last year’s event. They failed to mention the sponsoring group, the Christian Businessmen’s Committee for Downey.
