Marking Year of Homeless

Share

Like many others, I hope, I was dismayed by the City of Santa Ana’s failure to secure the desperately needed aid for the homeless offered by Congress (“Homeless Advocates Assail Santa Ana for Waiving U. S. Grant,” Oct. 16).

While I was angry, I wasn’t surprised. Orange County has a long and tragic history of ignoring its very real social problems. While Orange County’s “rugged individualism” and entrepreneurial spirit are widely touted, a “let them eat cake” response to the cries of the needy is a travesty.

Wake up Orange County! These problems aren’t going to go away. They are right on our doorstep. It’s time we insist that our local governments act responsibly and decisively to alleviate social conditions that threaten, directly or indirectly, everyone’s quality of life.
