Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham, under fire for failing to list a $350,000 loan on his financial disclosure statement, said he has “never knowingly broken the law” and vowed to ride out a possible recall election. The governor, in his regular radio talk show, said he agreed with a poll published in the Phoenix Gazette that showed heavy support for impeachment if an investigation indicates Mecham broke the law by failing to list the loan. “I can appreciate and agree with people--heavens, if I knowingly broke the law, then I shouldn’t be governor,” he said. Mecham said he could not discuss specifics of the $350,000 loan from Tempe attorney and developer Barry Wolfson because it is under investigation by the attorney general’s office.
