Cuba’s human rights committee, which has no official standing under the Communist government, staged its first public activity--group attendance at a Mass at a Roman Catholic church in downtown Havana. Committee leader Ricardo Bofill said it was the first in a series of weekly public meetings at Havana churches that are intended to demonstrate the group’s intention to exist openly. About 200 people, including some Western diplomats, attended the Mass. The government has said the group is a creation of the foreign press.
