Sym-Tek Systems reported a second quarter profit of $146,000, down 27% from the $201,000 reported for the same three months last year. Still, Sym-Tek president Ray Twigg described the results as a “return to profitability” after two quarters of losses.

Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 was $6.4 million, up from $6.2 million for the same period last year. Sym-Tek makes environmental test handling equipment for semiconductor manufacturers.

On a year-to-date basis, Sym-Tek has lost $244,000, compared with net income of $487,000 over the same period last year. Revenue for the first half of the fiscal year totaled $11.1 million, off from $11.9 million over the same six months last year.

Earnings and revenue were negatively affected over Sym-Tek’s first quarter by high research and development costs and weaker than expected capital equipment demand in the semiconductor industry, Twigg said.
