Local News in Brief : Call-Box Work Urged
Los Angeles County’s network of emergency telephone boxes along freeways should be upgraded or replaced, a panel says.
The recommendation was made by the Los Angeles County Criminal Justice Coordination Committee, an advisory panel to the county Board of Supervisors.
The panel noted myriad problems with the system’s 3,062 call boxes--one about every quarter mile along the freeways--including no dial tones at some phones, access to some blocked by construction, static levels making it impossible for callers to make themselves understood and lack of interpreters to help stranded motorists who don’t speak English.
The upgrading or replacement could be financed by a levy of $1 on each registered vehicle in the county, the panel said.
