Israeli troops carrying automatic rifles conducted house-to-house searches through a U.N.-run Palestinian refugee camp on the outskirts of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank and arrested 18 people suspected of violence during recent anti-Israel protests, the Israeli army said. The commander of the operation said the sweep at the Dahaisha camp was ordered after stones and firebombs injured three civilian motorists and a soldier on the Jerusalem-Hebron road in the last week. He added that several hundred Palestinian men 17 to 30 were rounded up for a check of their identity cards. Camp residents said more than 500 soldiers took part in the sweep.
