Many of the foreign models due to appear at the weeklong Kuwait Fashion Fair have decided to stay away after three missile hits and a bombing in this Persian Gulf nation, a newspaper said Monday.

As a result, several fashion shows have been canceled, the English-language Kuwait Times reported. Fashion houses from 16 countries are taking part in the fair.

The newspaper quoted the fair’s exhibition manager, Lola Anderson, as saying the models stayed away because of tensions in Kuwait and the Persian Gulf.

In 10 days, three missiles have hit oil tankers or facilities in Kuwait, and a bomb has wrecked the sales office of Pan American World Airways.

In an editorial, the Kuwait Times, an independent paper, commented:

“Today’s ladies of the catwalk do not care to take things in their stride. Their hardier sisters of bygone days would have braved fire and brimstone to make it to the front, if only to live up to show biz tradition: that the show must go on.”
