The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Thomas R. Pickering, said he is satisfied with the treatment Palestinian-Americans receive in that country but that he is concerned about plans to expel a Palestinian activist who is a U.S. citizen. In July, after receiving complaints from Arab and black Americans, the State Department threatened to issue a travel advisory telling U.S. tourists they could be subject to discrimination in Israel. Pickering said the embassy has taken “great interest” in the conflict over Mubarak Awad, 44, a Palestinian-American who has urged Palestinians to adopt nonviolent methods to protest Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
