Unit shipments of recordings--cassettes, compact discs and LPs--increased by more than 18% in the first half of 1987, and the dollar volume of those shipments increased by 28.5% over the same period in 1986, according to figures released by the Recording Industry Assn. of America. The increase in shipments marks a welcome reversal for the industry, which had seen the total number of units fall in recent years despite an increase in dollar volume due to the higher price of compact discs. For the first six months of 1987, shipments of compact discs increased by 131%, cassettes were up by 22% and LPs fell by 5%.
