The World : 5 More Warships in Gulf

Share

Five fresh U.S. warships, including an amphibious landing ship and two long-awaited deep-water minesweepers, moved into the Persian Gulf for duty with the task force that shepherds re-registered Kuwaiti tankers. Three more U.S. minesweepers are just outside the gulf and are expected to enter the waterway shortly, military sources said. With the new arrivals, the sources said, the United States now has about 40 ships in the gulf area, including large contingents in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. Besides the minesweepers Esteem and Enhance and the tank-landing ship Barbour County, the new arrivals included the 3,700-ton frigates Carr and Elrod.
