Lefebvre Agrees to Inquiry by Vatican
VATICAN CITY — Rebel Swiss Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre has met with Vatican officials and said that he has agreed to a Vatican investigation of his dissident group as a step toward reconciliation of it with the church.
Lefebvre, 81, was suspended from the ministry in 1976 after a long period of rejecting the validity of the reforming Second Vatican Council, religious liberty and ecumenical ties to other Christians.
Lefebvre said the Vatican now is ready to recognize the group he founded in Econe, Switzerland, the Priestly Society of St. Pius X, and its more than 200 priests he has ordained for its centers in various countries. There was no comment from the Vatican on Lefebvre’s remarks.
