A Lotus racing car delivered to the late James Dean a week before he was killed in a crash of his Porsche in 1955 has been auctioned for $46,750 at Christie’s auction house in New York. An unidentified buyer bidding by telephone from California bought the Mark IX Lotus, valued at $25,500 in good condition. The Lotus had been delivered to the 24-year-old star of “Rebel Without a Cause” and “East of Eden” without an engine; Dean, an amateur racer, was going to have an American engine installed, but died before it could be done.
