NWA’s income rose 46% to $87.3 million in the third quarter, in part because the company sold surplus gates and landing slots that resulted in non-operating income of $26 million. The St. Paul, Minn.-based parent of Northwest Airlines said that during the quarter it followed a strategy of selectively allocating capacity in key markets to maximize revenue, and that traffic increased 25.1%.
