Three English yacht clubs were added Monday to the list of challengers aiming to dethrone San Diego Yacht Club in the 1991 America’s Cup, Sail America officials said.

The clubs had met the Saturday deadline for applications to compete in the prestigious international yachting regatta, but weren’t among those named Sunday because their $25,000 application fees hadn’t been posted, said Sail America, the syndicate managing the event.

The new challengers are the Crusade Yacht Club, Isis Corinthian Yacht Club and the Royal Canoe Club. They join 18 other challengers from 10 countries--including another English yacht club--who have applied to compete in the regatta scheduled for 1991 off the San Diego coast.
