Local News in Brief : 5th District Hopefuls

Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky’s not so hidden ambitions to vacate his job so he can become Los Angeles mayor in 1989 has given rise to a likely-to-grow list of possible successors.

First out of the blocks is community activist and slow-growth advocate Laura Lake, who helped another slow-growth partisan, Ruth Galanter, defeat Yaroslavsky ally Pat Russell for reelection earlier this year. Lake, president of Friends of Westwood and co-founder of Not Yet New York, filed papers Monday forming an “exploratory committee” for the 5th Council District seat that Yaroslavsky has held since 1975.

In an article Tuesday about potential candidates to succeed Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky if he runs for mayor in 1989, Havi Scheindlin’s name was misspelled. Scheindlin is Assemblyman Tom Hayden’s political director.

Others mentioned as possible candidates for the post are attorney Lisa Specht, who finished a respectable second in 1985 in a citywide race for city attorney; Javi Schindlin, an aide to Assemblyman Tom Hayden; and Steve Saltzman, a former field deputy to Mayor Tom Bradley and an unsuccessful Assembly candidate years ago.
