A former top aide to District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry Jr. pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of second-degree theft for taking $1,500 from the mayor’s ceremonial fund in 1984 and 1985 to pay for a fur coat for the mayor’s wife. According to papers filed in U.S. District Court, Robert B. Robinson used the money to pay a fur store where Barry bought the coat. “It should be noted the government has no evidence Marion Barry had knowledge of or was involved in illegal expenditures involving this fur coat,” Assistant U.S. Atty. Daniel Bernstein said in court.
