Local News in Brief : Orange : Infant Care Unit Plans Carnival for ‘Alumni’
- Share via
The UC Irvine Infant Special Care Unit will hold a free carnival for its “alumni” on Nov. 14. Last year the unit received more than 1,200 premature and full-term babies who needed special care with respiratory machines, antibiotic treatment and surgery.
The unit has an estimated 80% survival rate, according to discharge and event coordinator Diane Mawyer.
The 13th annual carnival, which will be held in a parking lot directly behind the UCI Medical Center, will be hosted by the ISCU parent support group and will feature a petting zoo, bluegrass band, Disneyland characters, game booths and a clown to entertain children.
“The carnival is fun for everybody. It’s nice to see the kids, since sometimes you get real attached to them and their families,” Mawyer said.
