Macy’s of California was sued for $10 million in damages by two former store security agents who claim they were falsely accused of stealing $50,000 at the chain’s store on San Francisco’s Union Square last May. The San Francisco Superior Court suit, filed on behalf of Kelly L. Donnelly, 28, a nine-year employee, and Marty A. Rivas, 24, a Macy’s worker for four years, said the money was later returned by a man whose son confessed to the crime. The two, represented by attorney James Collins, said they have been unable to find work as a result of suspicions they were involved in the theft. They claim to have lost most of their friends and “suffered humiliation, mental anguish, depression and emotional distress.” A Macy’s-Union Square employee pleaded guilty to stealing the money and is scheduled for sentencing Nov. 12. Macy’s of California President Richard Champ and other spokesmen for the chain could not be reached for comment.
