World Jewish leaders, meeting in New York, decided to hold a major demonstration in Washington on the eve of Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s Dec. 7 summit with President Reagan. Participants in the meeting told reporters that the demonstration will be designed to convince Gorbachev of the need to let Jews emigrate freely from the Soviet Union. The demonstration is expected to attract tens of thousands of people, many of whom will be bused or flown into Washington at a time when security will be extra tight in the nation’s capital. U.S. Jewish groups are applying for permission to stage the demonstration at the Lincoln Memorial.
