Local News in Brief : Rally Protests Racism

Share

As part of a statewide “Week of Protest” against alleged racism in education, a coalition of black, Latino and Asian students sponsored a rally Thursday at California State University, Los Angeles, with about 100 people attending the event inside the Student Union.

Protesters alleged that minorities already are under-represented in California’s higher education system and that their numbers will be cut further because all Cal State campuses are increasing the number of specific high school courses required for admission. High schools in minority areas are not prepared for the changes, they said.

A spokesman for the Cal State system denied that the new requirements will hurt minorities and said that all high schools are well aware of the new emphasis on such basic studies as English and mathematics. The requirements began in 1984 and will increase next fall and again in 1992.
