WASHINGTON — A high-ranking State Department official will travel to Japan and China next week for talks with new leaders in both countries, the State Department said Friday.
Gaston J. Sigur, assistant secretary of state for Asian and Pacific affairs, will leave Sunday for Tokyo where he will meet Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita and convey an invitation from President Reagan to come to Washington at the earliest possible opportunity.
The State Department said Sigur’s meetings in Beijing will give him an opportunity to assess U.S.-Chinese relations following China’s annual party congress.
