The Fuzzy Fifties

Come on, Jack Miles--just because you don’t have fond memories of the ‘50s, that doesn’t mean they weren’t good times.

What about Elvis, the Mickey Mouse Club, Mom and apple pie? As a child who grew up in the ‘50s, rock ‘n’ roll, patriotism and strong family ties are among my fondest memories. As a child who thanked his lucky stars for gravy bread on the table, these things, though intangible, were what sustained me from day to day.

The ‘50s were good to me. And to a lot of other kids like me. Hell, I was so happy that I didn’t even know I was poor!

Yes, maybe the Polish writer Tadeusz Konwicki hits the nail on the head remembering his “one and only youth.” So, what’s wrong with that? There will always be good and bad times. Why dwell on the bad and shoot down the good?
