Mission and Mansion: a Contrast in Values

The real estate section (Oct. 25) featured an article “New Haven for Homeless to be Oasis on Skid Row.” It described the efforts of a group headed by the Rev. Mark Holsinger to build a new building to provide counseling, food, beds, etc. for unfortunate people and help them to help themselves. This is a worthwhile project and a good example of putting money back into society to help people.

I found it ludicrous that on the same page was another article entitled, “Merv Griffin Creating Mountaintop Estate.” Mr. Griffin is building a 25,000-square-foot, multimillion dollar home for himself on 157 acres even though he has three other homes available. His ego must be so enormous that he thinks of no one but himself. While he has numerous mansions from which to choose, there are thousands and thousands of people who do not even have one room to call their own.

Mark Holsinger is a much better human being for doing what he can to better society than Merv Griffin will ever be rattling around in his mansions and spending all that money on himself!
